Sometimes Your Back Just Hurts

Sometimes your back just hurts. ⁣

And it isn’t rooted in some holistic psych, deep attachment need that was never met, or a trauma response (not *everything* is a trauma response by the way). It’s biomechanics, and movement-based treatment approaches work great for that.⁣

And sometimes how your system is processing non-mechanical stressors (social, psychological, relational, etc) is a major contributor to your pain. We have stuff for that too. ⁣

Most importantly, we need an assessment process that values both but isn’t pushing either; because mechanical and non-mechanical stressors aren’t always linked in a meaningful way. ⁣

Sometimes we need to have a moment with the mind-body connection to break a pattern. And sometimes we need to move with more skill and resilience; simply getting stronger. ⁣

Somatic Experiencing gives us the mind-body moment, rehabilitative movement changes the mechanical stressors, and acupuncture can be adjusted to suit both processes. ⁣

Sometimes what makes pain difficult to change is the overlap between all of these factors, and we need to appreciate the specific shape of someone’s pain Venn diagram and match the treatment strategy appropriately.
